According to the National Floor Safety Institute, slips & falls are the cause of over 1 Million emergency room visits per year, and are the leading source of Workers Compensation claims in the US. How can you protect yourself? Here are some strategies:
#1: Pick Up Spills Immediately
Every school should have a Shop-Vac on hand for picking up spills. It’s cheap insurance.
#2: Don’t Mop Near People
Wet mopping in occupied areas is a bad idea. Wait at all costs.
#3: Use Wet Floor Signs
If floors do get wet, you must alert people to the situation by setting up a safety perimeter with cones and wet floor signs. If possible take a picture with a smart phone to document it.
#4: Use Entry Mats
The most common falls happen right at the entrance. Place as many entry mats as possible in egress paths in addition to using wet floor signs.
#5: Deal with Melting Snow/Ice
Follow the steps from our blog post titled "Winter is Coming" to properly deal with ice and snow outside as well as the indoor tracking.
