You may have seen these machines in grocery stores, but auto-scrubbers are an essential part of floor care in schools as well. An auto-scrubber is a device that dispenses cleaning solution, scrubs the floor and vacuums up the resulting liquid. It leads to much cleaner floors and over time can be a big savings on labor costs. What should you look for in choosing one?
Size: This is measured by the size of the circular pad mounted in the front of the machine. Usually it’s 17”, 20” or 26”. Make sure the machine can fit in doorways and elevators before buying. Also check the tank sizes to limit the need to refill.
Power & Batteries: Most auto-scrubbers are powered by batteries to maximize productivity. There are two types: wet (lead-acid) and gel (AGM). Gel batteries are much-more expensive but are zero maintenance. Check run-times for calculating how long it can be used per charge.
Operation: Most auto-scrubbers require the operator to walk-behind and guide the machine, but some allow the operator to stand or sit on the machine while driving it. Choosing one or the other would depend on how big your building is and how much hard-surface flooring needs to be cleaned. If you have more than 100,000sf you should consider alternatives to walk-behind units.
